Toastmasters hold very successful open evening
ENNISCORTHY Toastmasters held a very successful open evening recently in the IFA Centre on Mill Park Road.
President, Benny Sullivan, welcomed everyone to the event which began with an interview featuring two of Wexford’s most prominent and highly regarded sports stars, Mick and Ursula Jacob, who between them have six all-Ireland hurling and camogie titles and seven all-star awards.
Mick Jacob also has the distinction of being Wexford’s first ever all-star.
He recalled to those present his memories of training in the 1960s for the U21 and senior all-Ireland finals.
As part of his training regime he ‘ran through the fields in Oulart the Ballagh and jumped ditches and ran up hills’.
In contrast, Ursula brought things right up to the present and outlined the rigorous routine that modern hurlers and camogie players undertake to get match fit.
She spoke of fitness coaches, nutritionists, logistics, strength and conditioning.
‘Every aspect of the game is analysed and team work and tactics are very much part of the game,’ she said.
She also gave great insight into the preparation that goes into her work as a TV analyst.
When Mick was asked what do you do if you lose a final his answer was straight to the point: ‘You drive on and keep going.’
A long standing member of Enniscorthy Toastmasters, Jim Doyle, gave a testimonial speech that highlighted the journey of the organisation in Enniscorthy over the last 25 years.
His service was recognised when he was presented with the Enniscorthy Toastmasters appreciation award by the Jacobs.
The Toastmasters always welcomes new members and involvement in the organisation is a fantastic way to learn new skills especially in the area of public speaking.
The meetings, which are friendly and supportive, take place every second Monday evening at 8 p.m. in the IFA centre on Mill Park Road.
