Concerns over asylum seekers at Hotel Rosslare

-

MAJOR concerns have been expressed regarding the housing of asylum seekers in the old Hotel Rosslare building in the harbour.

Although not officially designated as a direct provision centre, in recent times asylum seekers have been bused to what in days gone by had been a thriving hotel in Rosslare.

Previously it was explained that the owners of Hotel Rosslare, the McEnaney Group, were using the vacant premises to take the overflow from other hotels they own around the country which are designated direct provision centres.

Cllr Ger Carthy voiced some major concerns that the people of the area have in relation to the building and asked the Chief Executive of the council to seek clarification. He pointed out that officially there are six direct provision centres in the South East, none of which are in Wexford.

‘ These people have no communication or involvement with the local community,’ he said.

‘It’s not just an issue for the locals in Rosslare, but it’s an issue for the asylum seekers too. They have needs and requirements too.’

‘I’d like this to be raised between the local authority and the Department of Justice. We were told it would be a temporary thing, but it’s going on for many months now.’

Chief Executive of the council Tom Enright stated that it was still true to say that there is no designated direct provision centre in Wexford.

He stated that they are aware of the situation with Hotel Rosslare and would be following up with the Department and the owners of the hotel on the matter.
