E’CORTHY RUGBY
Enniscorthy 31, St. Mary’s 32: Following a great victory away to Malahide on the opening day of the season, the Enniscorthy J1s were hoping to continue in this vein against St Mary’s in their second outing.
Anyone who made the journey to Alcast Park was treated to a humdinger of a game, with end-to-end rugby and some great individual displays.
Enniscorthy started against the wind and were made to defend for long periods of the opening quarter, with St. Mary’s crossing in the corner for the opening try.
Following this, Enniscorthy got their hands on the ball and dominated the remainder of the first-half. They were rewarded with two tries which Mick Farrell duly converted, and Enniscorthy led at half-time 14-10.
The second-half continued to excite, with both teams willing to throw the ball from side to side on this fine October afternoon.
Enniscorthy crossed for three more tries in the second-half but alas it was not enough as, with ‘last play’ called, St. Mary’s put together a winning move consisting of wave after wave of tight attacks to get over the line and rob the points.
The Enniscorthy lads can take plenty from this game, with a mix of young guys having only their second senior game ably led by more experienced campaigners.
