Support for trans people making a mark in Wexford

- By CATHY LEE

THE Gorey Adult Trans Support Group, which is the only transgender support group in operation in county Wexford provides a non-judgmental environment for trans, non-binary and questioning people to express themselves and find support.

Trans is an umbrella term to describe people whose gender is not the same as, or does not sit comfortably with, the sex assigned at birth.

Karen McCann of Gorey Youth Needs said that the group at the moment is small but social, and meets monthly.

‘At present the group is under redevelopment with a new facilitator so we are meeting up in the Gorey Family Resource centre for tea and coffee, and discussing topics of interest to the members.

‘ Trans people are a very small group within the LGBT+ community and despite more visibility in recent years, many still have to contend with ignorance, misinformation, stigma and hostility from wider society which can cause huge distress,’ she said.

According to the Transgender Equality Network Ireland, 78% of trans people have had thoughts of suicide and 31% have attempted at least once.

‘Having a peer support group allows people to come together and to discuss issues and experiences that are specific and relevant to them in a caring community centred environment of solidarity and understanding. It can help with social isolation, letting people know that they are not alone,’ she said.

Karen has seen members of the group improve self confidence and resilience.

‘Meeting peers who are also trans can help people see that they are valid and can thrive as trans people. The group acts as a resource for learning, as people deal with issues such as living publicly, navigating workplace and healthcare issues.

‘Everything in the group is most definitely kept private and confidential. This is agreed by all members of the group on joining’.

The group is open to all over people over 18 as well as friends and family, who agree to respect confidentiality.

‘ They are more than welcome to bring along a friend or family member support. Many people would often do this on their first night until they see the dynamics of the group and feel comfortable. There is also a separate group for under 18s’.
