NEWROSS

From 12 noon on Friday, October 18, past Presidents, current Presidents, lady and gent, current Captains of both gender, incoming President and the Captain for 2020, plus the Chairman and guests filed into the lobby of the clubhouse for the 18th running of the past Presidents’ golf outing.

The roll was called by John Murphy, a task he has performed in his own inimitable way for a long number of years.

All present enjoyed some light refreshments before selectors, Davy Doran and John Howlin, got to work in balancing the ten teams who were to participate in this eagerly-awaited event.

Davy, doubling up as starter, sent all on their way with a shotgun start which meant that teams finished at the same time. The weather was showery but an improvement on the previous days.

The selectors must have done a good job since two teams finished deadlocked on 91 points, and the third and fourth registered 90 and 89 points respectively.

Blazing a trail on the first nine holes, the team of Davy Doran (13), John Hartley (17) and the President, Mick Malone (19), carded a fantastic 51 points.

They say no game is won at half-time and, true enough, this team faltered on the homeward run, registering only 40 points to give them a final total of 91 points.

In the meantime, the trio of Jimmy ‘Ross’ Ryan (18), Willie Whitty (20) and Jamesie Murphy (24) were rock steady all through, bringing in halves of 47 and 44 to emerge victors by virtue of a better back nine (44/40) to claim the Killarney Crystal and the wine.

Third place went to the incoming Captain, Seán Furlong (13), Liam Quinn (16) and Paddy Bennett (22) with 90 points, whilst the incoming President, Brian Teague (16), Martin Forristal (20) and Tom Kent (25) took fourth prize with 89 points.

After the golf we were treated to a terrific four-course meal and a few after-dinner mints as well before the prize-giving. When it was announced, tthere is a prize for everyone in the audience’, it got the loudest cheer of the night.

Then the entertainment started with top-class singing from John Kennedy, Tom Kent, George Walsh and our charming lady Captain, Marguerite Sutton. The repartee continued well into the evening, with contributions from Seán O hUginn, Davy Doran, Seán Furlong and Peter Goggin.

Many tributes were paid to current Captain, Bill Hurley, and current President, Mick Malone, for their invaluable contribution to the affairs of the club in 2019, and both received mementos which they graciously accepted as a reminder of their tenure in office.

Best wishes were extended to incoming Captain, Seán Furlong, and incoming President, Brian Teague, who take over the reins for 2020.

Many thanks go to the bar staff of Anthony, Breda and Sheila plus the restaurant staff, and indeed all our players for making our 18th annual past Presidents’ day most successful and very enjoyable too.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

The accident on the quay in New Ross held up our start on Thursday for a while, with many players stuck in the traffic jam which ensued for some time.

However, they all arrived, with the biggest turn-out of recent weeks taking to the fairways. In all, we had 14 teams battling it out in dry sunshine, but the course was rather heavy after all the overnight rain.

The greens were in superb order for this time of year, and it was here that the game was won and lost. Seven of the 14 competing teams broke the 90-point mark, showing once again the fairness of the draw for teams each week.

Taking the honours were Jimmy ‘Ross’ Ryan (18), Willie Byrne (19), Aidan O’Connor (20) and Kenny Irwin (22) with a cracking score of 97 points.

On 92 points and placed second were Eddie Keher (12), John F. Roche (22), Frank Boyle (23) and Jamesie Murphy (24).

Third spot went to Dick Cuddihy (13), Brian Dolan (21), Jamesie Wallace (22) and Martin Burke (25) with a final total of 91 points.

It was a unique situation in the nearest the pin prizes, as Michael Gannon won on both the ninth and eleventh hole. Congratulations Michael - that doesn’t happen too often.

BALLYMONEY

Wednesday nine-hole competition, gents (qualifier): 1, Pat Miskella (12), 20 points; 2, Owen Martin (16), 18 points; 3, Anthony G. Doyle (20), 18 points.

The Ryder Cup-style match between Wexford and everyone else fixed for Saturday was postponed due to the heavy rain on Friday.

The course remained closed on Saturday but opened around 9 a.m. on Sunday after the frost cleared, and the players enjoyed glorious sunshine for a singles stableford (gents).

The annual home versus away members’ match saw players enjoy splendid autumnal sunshine in Saturday’s competition.

While the men’s match ended all square, the ladies’ home team were victorious, resulting in an overall win for the home members.

A most enjoyable meal and social evening followed at which our caterers - David, Siobhán and their team - were honoured for their service to Rosslare Golf Club for many years. We thank them all and wish them every success in their new venture.

A special thank you too to lady Captain Niamh Byrne, Jean Hamill, Oliver Bryce and Donal O’Keeffe for arranging the home versus away competition.
