O’Neill and Codd on the double

-

BARRY O’NEILL and Jamie Codd kept tabs on each other over the weekend with pointto-point doubles in Kinsale and Limerick.

At the South Union meeting in Kinsale on Saturday, O’Neill and Colin Bowe kept up their sparkling start to the season with a hard-earned neck success in the four-year-old maiden on Premiumaccess (by Milan), thanks to a slicker jump at the last.

O’Neill completed his double in the fiveyear-old mares’ maiden, and this was more comfortable on Seán Doyle’s Style it Out (by Gold Well) when taking it up two out to win by five lengths. Rob James was third on Colin Bowe’s Geta Present.

Luke Murphy (Inch) was just pipped by a head on Denis Murphy’s Honest Exchange by Concrete King for the Allens from Araglen in Cork.

At Moig South near Ballysteen in Limerick, Jamie Codd got on the board in the fouryear-old geldings’ maiden, winning by two lengths on Yousayitbest for owner/trainer Cian Hughes.

He doubled up in the five-year-old mares’ maiden on Immortality (by Spanish Moon) for Andrew and Paul Pierce from Killurin, with two and a half lengths to spare from Tiernan Power-Roche on Midway to Getaway for Michael Murphy’s Redbridge Stables, Duncormick.

Roche and Murphy got quick compensation in the five-year-old geldings’ maiden, with Bobby Bow (Framassone) holding on by half a length from Creative Venture, the only other finisher from seven runners, and they got second in the concluding older geldings’ maiden on Scottish Accent.

The Kilkenny Foxhounds raced at a new venue, Damma House, about five miles from the city, near Ballycallan.

There was total Wexford domination of the four-year-old maiden, providing the first four home.

Winner was James Kenny on Colin Bowe’s Prince Escalus (by Jeremy), clear of Simon Cavanagh on Denis Murphy’s The Grey Falco, Shane O’Rourke on Ray Cody’s Steps Match, and Luke Murphy on Matthew Flynn-O’Connor’s The Whiskey Man.

The Wexford Hunt races on Sunday at a new venue, Gordon and Mary Doyle’s Knockmullen House, just off the N25 on the Wexford side of New Ross. First race is at 12 noon, and gates open at 10 a.m.

They also race on Sunday at Dromahane in Cork, and on Saturday at Loughbrickland, Co. Down, and Lisronagh, Tipperary.
