BLUNDER WALL!

DAYS AFTER REPAIR WORK ENDS, ANOTHER CAR DAMAGES BRIDGE

- By BRENDAN KEANE

WORK on repairing the old bridge in Enniscorthy after it was hit by a car a few months ago was completed last week...only for it to be struck again the following day by another car!

On Wednesday morning a vehicle, understood to have been used in the delivery of items to a business on Slaney Street, rolled down the street and across the quay below the Antique Tavern before colliding with the wall of the bridge just a few feet from where extensive repair work had just been completed as a result of the bridge being struck last March.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) footed the bill for the original hit as the bridge was then on a national primary route.

However, this time around Wexford County Council will bear the cost of repairing it as the opening of the new M11 motorway reduced to the status of road over the bridge to that of a regional route.

WORK on repairing the old bridge in Enniscorthy after it was hit by a car a few months ago was completed last week only for the bridge to be struck again the following day by another car.

A vehicle, understood to have been used in the delivery of items to a business on Slaney Street, rolled down the street and across the quay below the Antique Tavern before colliding with the wall of the bridge just a few feet from where extensive repair work had just been completed.

When the bridge was initially struck in March the bridge was part of the national primary route between Dublin and Wexford and as such fell under the remit of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), however, with the opening of the new M11 motorway between Oylegate and Gorey the route through Enniscorthy was automatically reduced to that of a regional route and the cost of repairing the newly created damage will now rest with Wexford County Council.

A spokesperson for Enniscorthy gardai told this newspaper that the incident occurred at around 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning when the car which had been parked on Slaney Street rolled down and hit the bridge.

It’s believed the car also struck another vehicle before impacting with the wall and this may have reduced the amount of damage it caused to the structure of the bridge.

Speaking to this newspaper Area Engineer for Enniscorthy, Neil Dempsey, said initial inspection of the wall indicated that it’s mostly superficial rather than structural damage that was caused and if that is the case it’s hoped the wall will be repaired within a matter of weeks.
