Howie the Rookie comes home

- By BRENDAN KEANE

ENNISCORTHY actor, Fintan Kelly, is fast becoming one of the most talked about actors on the contemporary Irish circuit and with recent roles in major TV series like ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Krypton’ under his belt his is a name that is slowly making its mark on the international scene too.

Away from the silver screen Kelly is extremely busy on the live theatrical circuit and his current starring role in the hit play, ‘Howie the Rookie’, had earned him glowing praise all over the country.

Earlier this year he performed the show in the National Opera House, however, he is now on his way back to the model county and will bring the production to the Presentation Centre in Enniscorthy for two nights on Friday and Saturday, November 15 and 16, with both shows beginning at 8 p.m.

While he has thoroughly enjoyed touring the show around the country - to rave reviews it must be acknowledged - he told this newspaper that he is really looking forward to ‘ bringing it home’ to Enniscorthy.

‘I’m really looking forward to it because it’s always nice performing in county Wexford and obviously Enniscorthy is especially important for me,’ he said.

‘You also can’t beat performing in front of a live audience,’ he added.

In ‘Howie the Rookie’, Kelly play numerous different characters and that, obviously, comes with its challenges.

However, that was something he fully embraced.

‘ The biggest challenge with it is that there is no safety net because it’s just you,’ he said.

‘It was a bit daunting but I love doing it now.’

The success of the show, which is directed by James Power, will offer the audience an opportunity to take a trip with ‘Howie’ on a night out looking for vengeance.

The story, from Mark O’Rowe, offers plenty of scope for analysis of the human condition and the different facets of society.

Culminating the Howie tour in his home town is something Kelly is immensely proud of: ‘Bringing the play home is the highlight of our nationwide tour and I hope to see all of Enniscorthy there.’

The show is being staged by Stagemad Theatre Company and tickets, are now available from the venue box office on 053 9123764 or online through www.wexfordartscentre.ie.
