EVC students enjoy their trip to Berlin

-

STUDENTS from Enniscorthy Vocational College travelled to Berlin recently where they enjoyed visiting some of the most iconic historical sites in Europe.

The trip took place during the October mid-term break.

Twenty-five students accompanied by teachers, Ms McWalter; Mr Martin and Ms Murphy, spent four days in the German capital city viewing all of the landmark sites.

They arrived on Tuesday, October 29, and their tour began with an eagerly anticipated visit to the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp.

The infamous camp was used by Hitler during World War II.

A spokesperson for the school told this newspaper that the students were treated to ‘an excellent tour of the camp’.

They were also told about its role during World War II.

That tour was followed up by an interesting and informative visit to Stasi Prison which was used for holding political prisoners during the Cold War period.

The next day the students continued with their itinerary which included a visit to the former headquarters of the SS, the ‘ Topography of Terror’, and the Check Point Charlie museum - where East Berlin meets West.

From there the students went to the Berlin Bunker Museum.

The students also explored the city by foot, the highlight of which was the visit to the remains of the Berlin Wall, the Brandenburg gate, and the Holocaust memorial.

‘We also took a break away from history and the students visited the city’s Sealife Aquarium and the Berlin Dungeons,’ said the school spokesperson.

Those who went on the trip also got to avail of some much-needed ‘retail therapy’ as well.

The trip presented many highlights for the students including a night-time trip up the TV tower and sampling typical German food, including Curry Wurst, Wiener Schnitzel, spaghetti ice-cream and of course a doner.

‘ The students and teachers had an incredible time and fully immersed themselves in the German culture,’ said the spokesperson. The group arrived home satisfied but tired.
