NEWROSSSENIORS

‘When the going gets tough, the tough get going.’ That was the story of our weekly outing on Thursday.

We began the competition with bright skies and a gentle breeze. However, by the time that we finished the 18 holes it had turned wintry, with continuous sleety rain sweeping the course.

Some of the eleven competing teams cried halt after nine holes and, indeed, some wanted in after only six holes, but the day’s prizes went to those who persevered for the full 18 holes.

Once again, the scoring - even allowing for the conditions - was excellent. As usual, there was one team which pulled clear of the rest, garnering a terrific 97 points in the process.

Runaway winners were Jimmy Furlong (13), Michael Gannon (18), John F. Roche (22) and Tony Sexton (23).

The 89 points (after a re-check) scored by Patsy Farrell (20), Jamesie Wallace (22), Colin Casey (22) and Fr. Jim Curtis (23) proved good enough to claim the runners-up spot.

Third prize with 88 points went to Michael Kavanagh (17), Willie Kelly (20), Martin Forristal (20) and Jamesie Murphy (24).

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Hughie O’Connor on the ninth hole and Pat Traynor on the eleventh.

All players please note that, as and from next Thursday, November 14, we revert to the later starting time of 10.40 a.m., playing our normal 18 holes competition.

This is to alleviate any delay due to frost on the course, so the later start should help. All players should be inhouse by 10.30 a.m. at the latest in order for the draw to be made on time.

BALLYMONEY

Wednesday nine-hole competition (mixed): 1, Brian Moore (23), 27 points; 2, Peter Byrne (23), 24 points; 3, Martin Storey (21), 20 points, holding off Anthony G. Doyle and Stephen Greene on countback.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing persistent rain, the course had to stay closed for the weekend.

64SOCIETY

The 64 Golf Society outing to Kilkea Castle Golf Club on Saturday saw 28 members in action.

The course was in very good condition for the time of year. The greens in particular were excellent.

Results: 1, Jimmy Woods (13), 32 points (last nine); 2, Paddy Dore (22), 32 points; 3, Paddy D’eathe (9), 31 points; gross, Dean Grannells (4), 26 points; 4, Alan Gray (14), 30 points; first nine, David Kennedy (13), 16 points (last six); second nine, Bryan Hughes (14), 18 points.

Following the outing, at the presentation in 64 lounge, our new Captain, Bryan Hughes, thanked all those who played. He also thanked all those who helped to make the day a success.

Our next outing will be our Christmas outing, at Courtown Golf Club on Saturday, December 14. All members will be informed in the usual way.

DONOHOE’SSOCIETY

Donohoe’s Society played Rathaspeck Manor on Sunday, with 15 players in total for our second week of turkey vouchers.

Three players were doing their best to win, with all shooting high scores, and in the end first was Nicky Cahill (6). He won the birdie money also with two birdies and a score of 38 points.

Beaten on a countback into second place, also with 38 points, was Jim Breen (11), and third was Cliff Weeber (6) who also had 38 points.

The A.G.M. was held in Donohoe’s back room on Friday night, and it was decided that the weekend away will be booked after we have received a €30 deposit off any members interested in going. The deposit has to be paid on or before December 1.

Next week we play Quinnagh House. Please be there by 8.45 a.m. at the latest.

NEWROSS

This week we said goodbye to our friend John Murphy following an illness which he fought with his characteristic dignity.

John was a past Captain and also a past President of the club, as well as serving on the committee in every capacity over many, many years.

As was said at his funeral Mass, ‘He towered over most of us physically, but he didn’t look down on anybody’.

In light of John’s passing, reporting on golf seems inappropriate this week, so instead I will leave you with the poem ‘The Measure of a Man’ which seems fitting at this time.

‘Not - How did he die? But - How did he live? Not - What did he gain? But - What did he give?

‘These are the things that measure the worth Of a man as a man, regardless of birth. ‘Not - What was his station? But - had he a heart? And - How did he play his God-given part?

‘Was he ever ready with a word of good cheer? To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?

‘Not - What was his church? Not - What was his creed? But - Had he befriended those really in need?

‘Not - What did the sketch in the newspaper say? But - How many were sorry when he passed away?

‘These are the things that measure the worth Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.’
