Road drainage is an issue around Enniscorthy area

- By BRENDAN KEANE

ROAD drainage is an issue that needs to be addressed in certain areas of Enniscorthy according to officials in the local authority.

At this month’s Municipal District Council meeting Executive Engineer, Neil Dempsey, told the members: ‘ There are a lot of drainage issues out there at the moment.’

Cllr Jackser Owens highlighted a number of areas that require attention and said Bellview Court in Ballyhogue is one such area.

‘ The road is in an awful state there,’ he said. Cllr Owens also commented that the footpaths are also in a poor state of repair.

‘I think every councillor here has made the case over the years,’ he added.

Cllr Cathal Byrne said he had also been contacted about the conditions of the road and footpath in Bellview Court.

He also suggested the area might have to be taken in charge by the local authority.

Cllr Barbara-Anne Murphy highlighted the Knockduff Lane and Coolmela areas of Bunclody as being other locations where road repair work is required.

Describing some of the potholes as ‘craters’ she said some of the roads need more than just pothole repairing.

‘ They are becoming impassable,’ she said. In response Executive Engineer, Neil Dempsey, said he would check out the areas mentioned by Cllr Murphy.

Mr Dempsey said that Knockduff in the community involvement scheme but wasn’t sure about the other area.

‘I don’t think they’re interested in getting involved in the [scheme],’ replied Cllr Murphy.

With regard to Bellview Court, Mr Dempsey said he hadn’t been out there but will make it his business to do so.

‘I will see if there is anything about taking it in charge,’ he said.

With regard to repairs to roads and footpaths he said ‘it will be down to funding’.

Senior Executive Engineer, Tadhg O’Corcora, said the wastewater plant was taken in charge in 2012 and added: ‘Irish Water was involved in it last year and this year [and] there is some cleaning still to be done.’

‘However, surface water, footpaths and roads are up to the County Council,’ he added.
