GREENWAY TO VINEGAR HILL ON THE CARDS

- By BRENDAN KEANE

WORK has begun on developing a plan to create an urban greenway between Vinegar Hill and Enniscorthy town.

Presenting is report to the members of the local authority at their monthly meeting last week District Manager, Ger Mackey, told the councillors the greenway would connect the historic ‘and iconic battlefield site’ with the town.

He said the process is at a very early stage but it’s evident that development of such a greenway to the hill is possible.

‘It has the potential to open up tourism and recreational possibilities for the town and district through the hill,’ said Mr Mackey.

‘We are going to try and link the hill with the town,’ he told the members at their meeting.

Highlighting the iconic status of the hill and its association with the history of the county Mr

Mackey commented: ‘ The hill is nearly more well known than the town itself. People all over the world know about Vinegar Hill.’

The plan was welcomed by the members, however, Cllr Jackser Owens asked if facilities on the hill could improve and in particular he asked if toilet facilities could be installed there.

In response Mr Mackey said temporary facilities might be a possibility.

‘I would imagine some form of temporary, portable toilet could be put up there for people,’ he said.

Mr Mackey said provision of such facilities are ‘essential’ and added that it’s also important that visitors could buy a cup of coffee or tea while on the hill.

‘We are constrained by the archaeology [and historical significance of the site] but there could be some form of temporary facility on site during the summer,’ he said.
