Ballindaggin pupils get major awards

-

THE pupils in Ballindaggin National School are well known for their responsible attitude when it comes to the environment.

In addition to being highly regarded for its level of academic education, the Ballindaggin school is also known for encouraging its pupils to adopt good practice when it comes to green initiatives.

That fact was highlighted in exemplary fashion recently when some of the school’s pupils won major accolades at this year’s Wexford County Council Environmental Awards.

The school scooped the top prize for ‘Wexford’s Cleanest School’ and the ‘Young Environmentalist Award’ for their project, ‘Cup Alert’.

Speaking to this newspaper about the awards the principal of the school, Conor McDonald, said everyone was really proud of the achievement.

With regard to the school receiving the cleanest school in Wexford accolade for the second year in a row Mr McDonald said: ‘The award was earned for the staff and pupils’ efforts in tidying up around Ballindaggin during the national Spring Clean initiative.’

Referring to the ‘Young Environmentalist

Award’, Mr McDonald said that was a result of the efforts of some of the school’s fifth and sixth class pupils who reached the Eco-Unesco Young Environmentalist finals last year and were highly commended for their work.

‘They raised awareness around the area of reusable coffee cups and biodiversity,’ said Mr McDonald.

The principal also acknowledged the staff, pupils and their parents for their support in helping the school achieve success in the awards scheme.

‘The school is already planning its Spring

Clean for 2020 and is working hard to improve biodiversity around the school grounds,’ said Mr McDonald.

He also commented that work has begun on the school’s efforts to achieve its next green flag too.

The annual environmental awards is an initiative the County Council organises to acknowledge and recognise the work of community groups, schools, organisations and individuals throughout the entire county who are doing their bit to make Wexford a healthier, cleaner place to live and work.
