Blackmore ‘not another careerist politician’

- By CATHY LEE

GOREY’S COACH HOUSE played host as the People Before Profit by-election candidate Cinnamon Blackmore was officially launched by Bríd Smith TD.

To the room full of mixed generations, Bríd Smith described the Gorey candidate as someone who is around and active all year long, not just at elections.

‘Cinnamon is not another careerist politician, she’s an activist and a socialist. As a family carer she has seen first hand the affects the cuts from Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have had on the people in Wexford.

‘It’s time more people like Cinnamon stood up to challenge a politics that has failed so many of us. I look forward to working alongside Cinnamon in the Dáil and would encourage everyone to vote for her, to elect a rebel to the Dáil to fill Mick Wallace’s vacant seat,’ she said.

On the night, Blackmore spoke at length about the health crisis, speaking of mental health services (CAMHS) in particular.

‘Our children aren’t falling through the cracks anymore, they are being shoved and I have had enough.

‘We can do things differently and we don’t have to accept this. We are one of the richest countries in the developed world yet the government won’t spend it on our children’s futures, they will give themselves a nice pay rise,’ she said.

The lack of spaces for our children to attend second level schooling is something Blackmore says she will continue to campaign on, and she also discussed the housing situation in Wexford at length.

‘People Before Profit want to open the vacant homes, cap rents and build public homes on public land. We are fighting for system change.

‘We are the only party willing to tackle the fossil fuel industry and fight to put the planet before profit’.

Reacting to last week’s comments made in this newspaper by Fine Gael candidate Verona Murphy, she said that mental health and homelessness are not to be scoffed at.

‘I have been campaigning for better mental health and CAMH services here and been fighting to make Wexford better. We marched these streets and called on Fine Gael to provide adequate funding.

‘I’m urging the people of Wexford to vote for a real fighter and not just a mouthpiece for the far right.’
