Taghmon the double

League title added to Junior ‘B’ championship

- BRIAN CARTY

TAGHMON-CAMROSS 1-10 BUFFERS ALLEY 2-6

SARAH AND Ciara Banville were the chief tormentors for Taghmon-Camross, as their combined total of 0-8 steered the New Ross District side to the end of season Junior ‘B’ camogie league title, although they were made sweat by a strong-finishing Buffers Alley outfit on the way to a 1-10 to 2-6 success in Oulart recently.

Under the tutelage of recently-appointed Wexford Intermediate manager Alan Brennan, most of the groundwork for the victors was done in the opening quarter, during which phase they created a 1-5 to nil lead by the twelfth minute.

The excellent Sarah Banville opened their scoring with a nice point from the right wing after only a minute, while Ciara Banville latched onto to the re-start to immediately double their tally.

A brief flurry close to goal saw Caitlin Nash swipe over on three minutes, while Sarah Banville assisted Ciara to make it 0-4 to nil with less than four minutes played.

And Taghmon-Camross pushed further clear on seven minutes when captain Aoife Morrissey’s attempted pass across the square deflected kindly into the path of Kara Delaney, and the corner-forward netted from a first-time pull.

Ciara Banville added another point for good measure after combining with her sister, Laura, before Buffers Alley finally broke their duck when the impressive Amy Mitten slapped over a point after 20 minutes.

And the Monamolin women goaled on 26 minutes, with Mary Alice Murphy playing the initial pass inside and Aisling Lyons eventually finishing scruffily from close range.

Taghmon-Camross responded with the last two scores before half-time, from Claire O’Gorman and Ciara Banville (after a lengthy solo), to leave the score at 1-7 to 1-1 by that juncture, while the latter tagged on a free in the first play on the re-start.

The re-introduced Sarah and Ciara Banville (free) brought up the Taghmon-Camross final total by the 42nd minute, but Buffers Alley proceeded to dominate the remainder of the game.

Indeed, points from Lyons, Mitten (two) and Johanna Hearne saw them close to within 1-10 to 1-6.

Goalkeeper Méabh Hughes then trekked forward to plaster a close-in free past a sea of bodies to reduce the gap to the minimum two minutes before time, only for a determined Taghmon-Camross to hang on.
