Urgent appeal to address drainage in Enniscorthy

HEAVY RAIN CAUSED HOUSES TO FLOOD THIS WEEK

- By BRENDAN KEANE

AN Enniscorthy councillor has called on Irish Water and the local authority in county Wexford to ensure that issues with lack of adequate drainage on public waste water systems are addressed.

Cllr John O’Rourke made his call in the wake of last week’s period of heavy rain which resulted in houses in certain parts of Enniscorthy having water literally going in through the doors.

The Killagoley Terrace area of the town was particularly badly affected with water flowing out of a public sewer and in through the back yards of a number of houses.

Speaking to this newspaper about the issue Cllr O’Rourke said the issue of a natural spring in the area not being adequately addressed has been going on ‘for nearly 30 years’.

‘ This always happens when it rains heavily as it did last week,’ he said.

‘I am calling on Irish Water and the County Council to do what’s required to stop this happening once-and-for-all,’ he added.

Cllr O’Rourke said the shores are not being cleaned out and that this needs to be done.

‘ There is a build up of debris in the shores and the water is literally flowing out of them and into the houses,’ he said.

Cllr O’Rourke said the local authority needs to ensure the shores are properly cleaned out.

He also suggested that the natural spring in the area should be capped off because ‘everyone knows what happens as soon as there is heavy rain’.

‘We are supposed to have a plan in place to ensure that gullies are free of debris,’ he said.

‘It’s about time this work was done and not just say that it will be done.’
