Local students scoop business awards
PAST pupils in secondary schools across county Wexford were among the recipients of prestigious awards and certificates at a recent ceremony in Waterford Institute of Technology.
Lorcan Lacey, from Ballymurn, who is a past pupil of St Mary’s CBS, Enniscorthy, and Conor Duff, from Graignamanagh, a former student of Good Counsel College, New Ross, were presented with major achiever awards in their respective courses of study.
The awards were handed out at the WIT School of Business Annual Recognition of Awards ceremony.
The two students were also included on the Dean’s List and were presented with certificates in recognition of that.
The Dean’s list is composed of the top 5 per cent highest performers in the Business school and a number of Wexford students were among those who achieved First Class honours in their continuing studies.
Mr Lacey is studying for a Bachelor of Business (Hons) and was presented with the CPA Financial Accounting prize while Mr Duff, who is studying for a BA in Accounting, was presented with the CPA Financial Accounting prize and the Rowe Medal Award.
The latter award was presented by CPA representative, Jacinta Burke.
Mr Duff embarked on his
BA in Accounting as a mature student and said he was initially worried that he would find it difficult to study for exams again.
‘I entered this college two years ago worried that as a mature student I would find it hard to get used to studying and exams again,’ he said.
‘Now, in the present day, I’m receiving two awards for my academic achievements,’ he added.
‘I hope other people realise you’re never too old to return to education and change your life.’
Among the other students who made the Dean’s List were: James Byrne, from Rosslare, who is studying the Bachelor of Business (Hons); Angelika Batko, a former student of FCJ, Bunclody, who is studying the Bachelor of Business (Hons); Rían English-Adams, former student of FCJ, Bunclody, who is studying the Bachelor of Science in Retail Management; and Aideen Cummins, former student of Coláiste Bríde, Enniscorthy, who is studying the Bachelor of Business (Hons).
A spokesperson for WIT said recognition of student effort and excellence is something the School of Business continually does.
‘ These top performing students can influence others to achieve their potential as peer role models,’ said the spokesperson.
The awards were called by the course leaders and presented by the Head of School (Dean) of Business, Dr Thomas O’Toole.
In his speech Dr O’Toole said the students on the Dean’s list are among the highest achievers nationally and internationally.
‘ Their quest for academic excellence is underpinned by their commitment and enthusiasm for their programme of study,’ he said.
‘It bodes well for their future careers.’
