No curse for Murphy as history is made at podcast recording

- By SIMON BOURKE

A little moment of history took place in Wexford Library recently when Peter Murphy recorded the first episode of his new podcast series in front of a live studio audience.

Never before had a podcast been recorded in the library and to mark the occasion a sizeable crowd gathered to hear Peter, who is more commonly known as Cursed Murphy, interview singer, songwriter, actress and filmmaker Maria Doyle Kennedy.

In an intimate setting, in front of a hushed audience, Peter discussed Maria’s life and times, charting her career from its beginnings in The Commitments to more recent work on hit television show, Orphan Black.

This 50-minute interview, now available to listen to on Spotify under ‘Cursed Murphy’s

Podcast’, also documented Maria’s musical exploits, including her time in Hothouse Flowers, The Black Velvet Band and her work as a solo artist.

In addition to being available on Spotify, the podcast is also free to listen to on anchor.fm as of today.

The podcast series will, in Peter’s words, feature, ‘in-depth encounters with intense people: writers, musicians, artists, athletes, filmmakers, technologists, philosophers and more. The aim? To provide interesting, enlightening and entertaining long-form interviews for people who like to listen.’

Discussing the library’s role in hosting the event, Nicola McGrath of Wexford Library said, ‘Wexford Library were delighted to be chosen as the community venue for the inaugural Cursed Murphy Podcast. This is a new event format for Wexford Public Library Service and we look forward to hosting similar live podcasting events during 2020. The Cursed Murphy Podcast was produced with the support of the Wexford County Council Arts Department.’

The second episode of Cursed Murphy’s Podcast will be available to listen to on February 4 and will feature an interview with Annemarie Ní Churreáin, a poet from the Gaeltacht.
