Bunclody is buzzing as Davy opens new gym

- By BRENDAN KEANE

THERE was great excitement in Bunclody recently when Wexford senior hurling manager, Davy Fitzgerald, took the helm at the official opening of Nolan Health and Fitness’ sister gym in the town.

As part of the event gym owner Sean Nolan organised a questions and answers session which, in addition to Mr Fitzgerald, also featured many stars of Wexford sport who all shared a common bond of excelling at their respective sports while also using the Nolan Health and Fitness in Enniscorthy.

Wexford lady footballer. Bernie Breen, was one of those in attendance along with Tom Hogan, who along with his family, narrowly missed out on winning the Ireland’s Fittest Family title.

They gave great advice to children in attendance about the importance of staying fit and healthy.

Wexford football goalkeeper, Conor Swaine, spoke about the dedication required to visit a gym three of four times-perweek.

Shaun Murphy spent nine months working under Sean in a work placement position from college and he outlined how he benefited from that experience.

Wexford GAA star, Paul Morris, who has been going to the Enniscorthy gym for over seven years was also warmly received at the event as were other well respected personalities associated with Wexford sport including Podge Courtney, Jim Doyle and Liam Spratt who all spoke with passion about what keeps them going.

Shane Dunne, from Kilkenny, met Sean Nolan at a World Handball championship event in Minneapolis, USA.

Mr Dunne, went on to become world champion at 23-years-of-age.

Ciaran Kavanagh, from Bunclody, came to Nolan Health & Fitness on a work placement programme two years ago and for him having a second gym opening in Bunclody was a very special event.

Development squad member, Podge Galvin, was another very popular guest and Maurice Kavanagh received a particularly warm welcome at the event.

Mr Nolan said that when he first came to him for help in the Enniscorthy gym ‘all those years ago’ he described himself as ‘Ireland’s unluckiest man’.

Mr Kavanagh required a programme based around having a heart transplant, kidney transplant, leg amputation and hip replacement.

‘As you could imagine I had to stay up all night going through notes but afterwards became close friends,’ said Mr Nolan at the opening.

He also said he loved Mr Kavanagh’s fighting attitude and because of that chose him to cut the ribbon with Davy Fitzgerald who Mr Nolan described as ‘one of the most passionate if not the most passionate man in sport’.

Mr Fitzgerald said he took great delight in cutting the ribbon on the new gym and that everyone in the Wexford senior hurling squad are determined to bring even more success to the county this season.
