A bright future for Gorey Pipe Band

-

ALL AT Gorey Pipe Band are looking ahead to big plans for 2020, from their return to the upcoming competition season to a new youth recruitment strategy in collaboration with the Ferns Diocesan Youth Service (FDYS) in Gorey.

Traditions are very important to Gorey Pipe Band, and now being in its 82nd year having been originally formed in 1938, known then as St Michael’s Pipe Band, it’s true that friendship and pride of place are just as important as the music these days.

John Cullen of the band said that the band belongs to the people of Gorey, and the members are just the tools that keep it going.

He remembers being taught to play the instruments as a young boy alongside his friends, many of whom are still fond members today having competed in the big competitions of the day.

All at Gorey Pipe Band would like to thank the people of Gorey for their continued support and generosity towards them, which is most commonly seen when the band are busking.

The members say that they owe the town a service, and so with ambitious plans this year to recruit more young people, they take pride in offering music lessons for free, which is something they have always done.

Preparations are underway now for the St Patrick’s Day parade as well as competitions, given that the band has not competed since 2017.

But the band is currently enjoying an influx of new members, both beginners and experienced players, while also investing heavily in the upgrading of its equipment and the implementation of a new recruitment strategy to top it all off.

With exciting times ahead, keep up to date with everything to do with the band by searching ‘Gorey Pipe Band’ on Facebook.
