Sigerson semis interest

-

WEXFORD WILL have an interest in both of the Sigerson Cup football semi-finals, due to take place tomorrow (Wednesday). Giant-killers I.T. Carlow caused another sensation when they dumped holders U.C.C. by 3-9 to 0-14 over the weekend, with Cathal Walsh (Monageer-Boolavogue) and Niall Hughes (Kilanerin) playing at corner-back and corner-forward respectively.

Their reward is a novel meeting with Letterkenny I.T. in Grattan Park, Inniskeen, under floodlights on Wednesday night.

On the other side of the draw, corner-back Martin O’Connor (HWH-Bunclody) helped U.C.D. to a 2-10 to 2-6 victory against St. Mary’s (Belfast).

That success has earned them a local derby semi-final against D.C.U. who looked polished when hitting seven goals against Queens University (Belfast).

On the Fitzgibbon hurling front, Cloughbawn’s Connal Flood came off the bench to score for W.I.T. as they booked a semi-final spot with a 4-23 to 1-12 win over a T.U.D. squad including Seán Delaney (Naomh Eanna) and Callum Quirke (St. Martin’s).

And there was a lot of Wexford involvement when D.C.U. defeated Maynooth by 1-20 to 1-12, with the winning team including Conor Firman (St. Martin’s) at right half-back, Damien Reck (Oylegate-Glenbrien) at midfield, Rory O’Connor (St. Martin’s, 0-7 frees) at centre-forward, and Conor Hearne (Shelmaliers, 0-1) at corner-forward.

The losers were represented by Naomh Eanna pair Jack Cullen and Eoin Molloy (0-1), as well as Diarmuid Kehoe (Geraldine O’Hanrahans) and Cormac Byrne (Faythe Harriers).
