Schoolgirls set sights on Gaynor Cup
THE ROAD to the Gaynor Cup tournament in June in Limerick began for the Wexford Schoolgirls’ League on Sunday when they travelled to Kilcullen to take on Kildare at Under-13 and Under-15 levels.
First up were the Under-15s and, after a tight opening quarter, Wexford eventually took the lead when Aoibh Thomas scored, but the advantage was shortlived as Kildare equalised from a corner three minutes later.
However, Wexford then took control of the game, with Aoibh grabbing her second before halftime, and Katie Law also scoring two goals for a 4-1 lead.
The second-half belonged to Wexford as they pressed strongly and scored another six, with Katie Law completing her hat-trick and Emma Cullen scoring two, while Laci Jane Shannon, Ashling Roche and Olivia Morris all added one each for a comprehensive 10-1 win.
A good overall team performance sets them up nicely for the next game at home to the Midland Schoolgirls’ League next month.
Next up were the Under-13 side, also playing the Kildare League, and they got off to a good start when Aoife McEldowney gave them a well-deserved lead.
And when Polly Redmond put them 2-0 up just before half-time, it seemed they were well in control.
Unfortunately, Wexford did not show the same clinical finishing in front of goal in the second-half and allowed Kildare back into the game, with two errors putting the home side in for two goals.
A win in the next game at home to the Midland Schoolgirls’ League would get their qualifying campaign back on track.
