SOCCER NEWS

On Sunday the 12th., the Men’s ‘A’ team were out against Corach Ramblers in the Neil O’Sullivan Cup, evenutally losing the game on penalties. Short a few players, with very heavy conditions, our lads seemed in control of the game but Corach too the lead against the run of play. Mick Sweeney soon had the sides level and the teams were tied 1-1 at the break. Both sides pressed hard after the resumption but when the score was still tied at 1-1 at full time, extra time had to be played. Three minutes into the first period, Nathan Dickson found the net. But Corach piled on the pressure and with less than a minute to go managed to scramble home another equaliser forcing a penalty shootout. When both teams scored five times from the spot, it came down to sudden death and they won by 7-8.

The previous day the under-16s lost 1-3 to St Joseph’s in Kilmuckridge. After a defensive muddle, they took the lead. They stretched the lead a little later, lobbing goalie Éanna Swords but he pulled off five or six spectacular saves after that to keep their lead to 0-2 at the break. Early in the second half, Fionn Walsh halved the lead with a well worked score but Joseph’s pulled ahead again near the end with the goal of the game leaving our lads with no points from a 1-3 scoreline.

The under-14s were also playing away on Saturday, taking on a tough Killenagh team in very poor conditions on a sticky, wet pitch. Jack Ellix found the net for our lads and Seán Óg Gilbride added another just before the break. Another goal from Seán Óg, a penalty coversion from Bobby Codd and a left-foot strike from Mossy Walsh added to our final tally of five goals. Killenagh grabbed a last gasp goal near the end but never looked like even sharing the points.

Playing away in Rosslare Strand, the under-12s soon took the lead through a Patrick Dempsey goal. The hosts drew level soon afterwards and playing with the wind in the second half, fully expected to win. But Donnach O’Hanlon blasted a shot to the back of the host’s net to give us a 2-1 win.
