When you look at the Royals it’s not so bad being a plain old peasant

-

I’VE spent the last week obsessing about what went on behind closed doors at Buckingham Palace since Meghan and Harry made the announcement that they’re basically doing a runner.

In all fairness you’d want to have been blind not to have seen this coming. It was about as inevitable as an Irish person getting drunk on Paddy’s Day.

From the day after the wedding when Meghan wore the white tights and shoes I knew it was never going to work. A Royal does not wear white tights and shoes. Actually even I wouldn’t wear white tights and shoes! What has surprised me though is Meghan’s steely determination to get what she wants, whatever the cost.

And yes I did feel sorry for her initially, particularly when she was pregnant and afterwards when she had to face the world’s media straight after giving birth (although yet again, she refused to have her picture taken until almost a week after Archie was born whilst usually it’s done in the first few days).

It’s horrendous to expect a woman to dolly herself up and present herself to the world with her newborn, a day after giving birth, knowing that her appearance is going to be dissected and commented on the world over. But that is the price of being a Royal.

And the suggestion by some that the media treating her badly was racist is absolutely ludicrous. This relationship was always going to be first class fodder for the Red Tops. She’s a Hollywood star, he’s a prince. That is the only reason they were hounded by the press.

Meghan knew what she was getting into. She’s no ingenue. She bagged herself a prince and was very aware of the entitlements and drawbacks that came with it. She just couldn’t hack it. And that’s fair enough. I couldn’t handle the rules either!

You have to dress modestly, no public displays of affection are allowed, you must sit a certain way, nails must be subtle, no selfies, no autographs, no political views. To all intents and purposes you are basically a puppet of the queen.

So yes, how anyone thought a beautiful American TV star, used to getting her own way and doing her own thing, was going to adhere to these restrictions is beyond me. But Queenie is no pushover and whilst officially wishing them well, has also stripped Harry of his royal and military duties as well as state funding, which must cut deeply.

Let’s face it, they won’t be strapped for cash. She’ll probably go back making cheesy TV programmes and he’ll do the circuit, giving inspirational talks. I only hope she truly makes him happy because he has given up everything for her.

When you think of it, it’s not so bad being a plain old peasant is it?

FROM THE DAY AFTER THE WEDDING WHEN MEGHAN WORE THE WHITE TIGHTS AND SHOES I KNEW IT WAS NEVER GOING TO WORK.
