Milestone for Codd

Jockey reaches 950 winner landmark

- RACING ROUND-UP

JAMIE CODD has had many landmarks in his illustrious career in points and on the track, and he reached another at the Bray Hunt meeting at Tinahely on Sunday when he rode his 950th winner between the flags. The 1,000 mark is surely his next target.

He had two winners and a second for his big ally, Denis Murphy (The Ballagh), before heading to Naas to win the bumper there.

He must share the headlines with Barry O’Neill who had four winners on Saturday and added two more at Tinahely, and leads Codd in the title race, 33 to 20.

Bring The Action (another winner by Jet Away) took the fouryear-old maiden to give Codd his 950th and his 50th winner at Fairwood.

Second was Simple Rules under Jamie Scallan for Seán Doyle, and third was Slievegar for O’Neill and Colin Bowe.

Codd and Murphy took the five-year-old maiden with Tucson

Train (Scorpion), from Sunset West for O’Neill and Bowe, and Straight Swap for Rob James and Donnchadh Doyle.

O’Neill and Bowe turned the tables in the Winner of Two on Ballymorris Rose (Getaway), with Codd and Murphy finishing second on Beatthebullet.

O’Neill doubled up in the concluding older geldings’ maiden on Locallink (Sandmason) for Shay and Elizabeth Slevin, Kiltrea.

Jack Hendrick (Mayglass) was second in the Novice Riders’ Open with Michael Murphy’s Better B Quick, and Tiernan Roche was second on Murphy’s Honest Opinion in the five-year-old mares’ maiden.

O’Neill’s had four winners from four rides at Saturday’s meeting in Co. Armagh. He had two winners for David Christie – Winged Leader in the Open and On The Sod in the Winner of Two; he took the Confined Hunt race for Marshall Watson on Danjaman, and the older geldings’ maiden on Westy Fox for Jim Dreaper.

Jordan Gainford was the only other Wexford rider and he had a couple of seconds, on Bridgets Pet, behind Winged Leader, and on Bold Pimpernel for Warren Ewing in the five-year-old geldings’ maiden, beaten just a neck by stablemate, Ranieri.

The Duhallow Hunt meeting at Kildorrery seemed to be almost totally ignored by the Wexford yards. The only one I noticed was Mick Goff’s Salute the King, fourth under Shane Fitzgerald.

Next Sunday Carlow Farmers race at Borris House, Carbery Hunt run at Bandon, and Limerick Hunt are at Crecora.
