The Good Father is well received

- By BRENDAN KEANE

THE members of Bunclody-Kilmyshall Drama Group took to the stage in the concert hall of FCJ Bunclody recently to stage ‘ The Good Father’, from the pen of Christian O’Reilly.

A spokesperson for the group told this newspaper that everyone involved with the production was delighted with how it went.

‘It went really well and it’s a very enjoyable piece full of wit and humour while also having a serious undercurrent,’ she said.

Starring Pádraig D’Arcy and Mairead Connaughton the play was based around the relationship between a hard-working painter, decorator and his wellheeled lawyer partner.

A quirky stage set saw the different settings being placed within a frame and the various furnishings to embellish each different setting had a common style to link them.

‘It’s a love story and a tragedy but in a modern stylised setting,’ said the spokesperson.

‘It’s a very enjoyable play and it was very well received,’ she added.

The play was also performed in Gorey last week on what was intended to be the first of a series of performances on the drama festival circuit, however, the onset of the coronavirus has obviously had an impact on drama festivals across the country.

However, in Gorey it received a standing ovation which was no surprise as a result of the reception it received in the FCJ - where it was staged over three nights.

A number of different issues were touched on in the work including aspects of parenthood and in many ways the play was very thought-provoking as all theatre should be.

It was a great production and was the culmination of many weeks hard work and dedication from the cast and crew.
