Yingtan City grateful for Wexford support in coronavirus fallout
HAVING written to Yingtan City in China last month to express solidarity with the people there as they battled the potentially deadly spread of coronavirus, Wexford County Council received a grateful reply this month.
In 2019, a delegation from Yingtan visited Wexford and received a warm reception, opening up exchanges between the two places.
Things have escalated in the interim and now, while China seems to be coming out the other side, Ireland is facing into an uncertain future as the country battles the spread of the virus on our own shores.
In the letter, the Foreign Affairs Office of Yingtan City thanked Wexford County Council for their concern and support at a difficult time.
‘We are very grateful to Wexford County Council for the concern and heart-warming support in Yingtan during the critical moment in the fight against the novel coronavirus disease,’ the letter said. ‘What the virus has done is cruel and will not last. What the Wexford people have done is touching and will be remembered forever.’
The letter went on to state that, following a major effort, the epidemic in Yingtan was effectively under control.
‘ The order of production and life has basically recovered,’ the letter continued. ‘We believe we will be able to completely defeat the virus and return to normal production and life soon.’
An invitation was extended for Wexford representatives to visit the city of Yingtan once the epidemic is under control, with a view towards strengthening the bond between the model county and the Chinese city even further.
