NEWROSSSENIORS

Forty-four hardy Senior golfers took to the fairways in extremely wintery conditions on Thursday.

After the spring-like day we enjoyed on the previous Thursday, it was some change this time round. A nasty south-west to westerly gale with a winter chill blew continuously during the competition and made good scoring tough to say the least.

However, there is always one team to defy the odds and race away to victory from the rest of the field.

This happened again last week when the Dublin/ Wexford/Cork team of Tony Harford, Mossy Ryan, Seán O hUginn and Tom Kent took the honours and the number one spot.

They brought in an incredible score of 103 points, which was some achievement considering the conditions.

Second on 99 points were Tom Murphy, Dan Quigley, John F. Roche and Martin Burke.

Third place went to Denis Kirwan, Andy Ronan, Willie Naddy and Mick Wade with 97 points.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Jamesie Wallace on the ninth hole and Tommy Ryan on the eleventh.

This coronavirus is already impacting on sporting fixtures and we are no different in postponing outings and helping to stop the spread of this deadly disease.

Our first away outing of 2020, at Gowran Park on Tuesday, March 31, has been postponed and a new date will be announced when things get back to normal.

Gone too is our overnight visit to Dundrum in April, and that too will be re-scheduled at a later date.

In the meantime, keep an eye on the New Ross Golf Club website as there may be a complete lockdown of all sporting fixtures including our Thursday outings.

In view of the current health situation, the usual Friday night Jive classes have been postponed until further notice.

Given this serious health situation which our country is now experiencing, it is worth noting that amateur golf is one of the few sports currently allowed to be played.

It is a non-contact outdoor sport and also at most there are four players participating at eight or ten-minute intervals. Safety guidelines for players have been sent out by the Golfing Union of Ireland.

Wexford Golf Club has, as I expect all clubs have also done, circulated these guidelines to all their members.

The club will, of course, obey all the recommended licensing laws which will apply during the current crisis.

The Joker was not won last weekend, and the weekly prize went to Denise Dunne.
