Askamore COVID 19 VIRUS – CANCELLEATIONS

It is a very different Askamore notes we are looking at this week in view of the steps being taken to combat the Covid 19 Virus.

Just to confirm Askamore Hall is closed till further notice and all related activities have been postponed.

The following events have all been cancelled: Carnew Community Art Exhibition March 14 to March 17, Carnew St Patrick’s Day parade, March 17 and South Wicklow Drama Festival from 20 to 28March.

KILRUSH DRAMA GROUP

Unfortunately the all-Ireland Drama Circuit has also fallen victim to the present health crisis and is cancelled. However, before this decision was made, Kilrush Drama Group had performed in five festivals, two of which had to be cancelled midway. The group came third in Kilmuckridge where Ellie Willoughby was nominated for best supporting Actress and Michael won Best Actor. Then on to Castleblaney, County Monaghan, where Michael Dunbar, John Redmond and Ellie Willoughby all received nominations.

The group then performed in Charleville, County Cork, last week, where they were delighted to win in the open section, with Michael Dunbar winning Best Actor, Pat Whelan/Mick Byrne winning Best Director and Ellie winning Most Promising young Actress. The group also won Best

Set and Best Lighting and Sound.

The group also performed in Ballyduff (West Waterford) and Wexford Drama Festivals where they received spontaneous standing ovations and excellent adjudications. Congratulations to everyone involved with Kilrush Drama Group on an excellent production.

As with all groups throughout the country who work tirelessly to bring their productions on the Circuit, it is sad not to be able to continue.

However, all agree that the health and welfare must come first. Stay safe everyone.

LEINSTER LEAGUE

The previous day, Saturday the seventh., the under-13 hurlers played host to Carnew in the Leinster League hurling competition and recorded 5-7 to 0-6 win. Aaron Cunniffe scored 2-1 of the total, Tadhg Dunn got 1-1 and Abram O’Neill added 1-0. Eoghan Whelan accounted for one to four of the total with Henry Kelly getting the other point.

ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

It was with great regret that the organisers of the annual St Patrick’s Day parade in the Harrow cancelled this hugely popular event. However, in the face of the covid-19 pandemic, they felt that they had to in the interest of public safety.

ALZHEIMERS COLLECTION

Well done to all the pupils of Boolavogue NS who raised €220 for the Alzheimers society on Friday, March 6. They all wore denim to school and donated money to this worthy cause. A special thanks has to go to the hardworking Students’ Council for all their hard work in relation to this fundraiser.

SOCCER NEWS

Due to the FAI directive in relation to the covid-19 pandemic, all soccer games have been cancelled till after March 29. On Sunday the 8th. the men’s ‘A’ team had a good 3-0 win over Tombrack to collect the league points. Matthew Dunne, Liam Walsh and Cormac Finn scored a goal apiece.

The club’s under-12 team were away to Cushinstown the same weekend in a tough, hard fought cup game. The strong wind behind them did not really help our lads in the first half and the sides were 0-0 at the break. Soon after the restart, Cushinstown were 2-0 ahead and they doggedly held onto this lead for most of the remaining half. Ronán Sweeney scored a great goal for our lads near the end but despite pressing hard, our lads could not manage to score a well deserved equaliser. On Saturday the 7th the under-16s were away to Wexford Albion, a premier side, in the cup. The gulf in divisions showed and despite the introduction of Matt Gahan adding bite to the attack, Albion ran out easy winners.
