KUDOS THIS WEEK to the officials of Wexford F.C. for a thoughtful and thoroughly decent gesture in the midst of this ongoing crisis. As a means of conveying gratitude to front line workers, they have offered all concerned a free season pass for the remainder of the 2020 season.

A statement on the club’s website explained that it was their way of displaying some ‘sincere gratitude’ to the many heroes putting the needs of others before their own in this incredibly trying time.

The offer applies to all front line workers in health care, medicine, An Garda Síochána, the emergency services, and supermarkets.

There will be no action in any competitions under the FAI banner until June 19 at the earliest, and hopefully by that stage it will be feasible for organised sport to resume.

If that’s the case, it could make a nice opportunity for fresh air and recreation to pay a visit to Ferrycarrig Park every second Friday night.

Front liners who wish to get their pass should email info@wexfordfc.ie with their name, address, and details of where they work.

On receipt of same, the club will be delighted to send them a season pass in plenty of time for the re-start of the season.

Given that the average attendance at home games is just above the 200 mark, Wexford F.C. must be commended for their willingness to accept a certain number free of charge through the turnstiles.

Fair play to all concerned, and if members of the public wish to support the club for this gesture, there is one way of doing so.

The much-improved match programme may be purchased online, with two copies available.

There is a limited number on offer of the combined publication for the men’s matches with Galway in the league, and Bray Wanderers in the EA Sports Cup, with a fascinating player focus article with new arrival Azeez Yusuff the chief highlight.

And plenty of programmes are on offer from the postponed Wexford Youths Women’s season opener versus DLR Waves, with five new articles including a profile of Lynn Craven.

Each programme will cost €4, and you can log on to www.wexfordfc.ie/shop-online to buy either or both.

Incidentally, the women had unveiled a number of new signings ahead of that game at home to DLR Waves that was due to go ahead on March 14.

Trina Duggan, a member of the Kildare ladies’ football team for the past seven years, has joined from Mill Celtic, while Kaiesha Tobin, a Waterford Senior camogie player, has also put pen to paper.

She lined out with Kilkenny United in the 2016-’17 season, and since then has featured with Dungarvan, as well as Seaview United in the Wexford league.

Another player prominent with the Waterford camogie team, Sally Kelly, has also signed and will be in the running for the goalkeeping role. She lined out with Tramore and Benfica before moving to Seaview.

The fourth new face, Sinéad Taylor from Edenderry in Co. Offaly, was on the Shelbourne squad which met Wexford in the 2015 FAI Women’s Cup final, and has also gained experience with Galway WFC and Peamount United.
