NEWS IN BRIEF

GARDA GREATS: Two members of Wexford’s All-Ireland winning team of 1960 were selected on the best-ever Garda hurling fifteen.

John Mitchell (Enniscorthy St. Aidan’s) got the verdict at left corner-back, while the late Seamus Quaid (Faythe Harriers) was selected at left half-forward.

SCOTT ON TARGET: Just over one year after scoring three points for the Wexford Senior footballers in their historic 5-12 to 1-7 league win over Galway in Tuam, Scott Doran finished with a similar haul in London’s 2-18 to 0-10 loss to Carlow in a Division 2A tie in Ruislip.

The Kilmore ace - whose death at the end of 2018 came as such a tremendous shock - was one of the key figures in a game refereed by Thomas Quigley from Davidstown-Courtnacuddy.

CHEPSTOW WINNER: Killurin-based stallion Polar Prince successfully sired Arctic Blue, a 200/1 winner at Chepstow in a two-mile hurdle. Polar Prince stood at Redinagh Stud, owned and managed by Pádraig Leacy.

BADMINTON CLASS: The Wexford Class 3 badminton team travelled to Clonmel and qualified for the All-Ireland finals, despite losing ten of the 2004 squad who were promoted to Class 2 after winning the title outright.

Gavin Smith, Donal O’Keeffe, Karen Hennessy, Rosemary Burke, Miriam Butler, Edel Doyle, Seamus Creane, Alan Mackey amd Laura Lynch formed the squad which took the final qualifying spot after tussles with Waterford and Kerry.

SAINTS EDGE CLOSER: Potential Premier Division soccer champions St. Cormac’s were held for only the third time in the season when they journeyed to take on New Ross Celtic.

The goals came early, with a Liam O’Loughlin header from 30 yards giving the visitors a fourth-minute lead before Paul Phelan equalised 60 seconds later.

CATS TAKE CREAM: Wexford fell apart in the second-half and allowed Kilkenny to move clear at the top of the South-East Under-14 inter-league schoolgirls’ soccer clash with a 6-2 success.

Sonja Murphy put the Slaneysiders ahead after five minutes and, even though Kilkenny levelled, Bernadette McCarthy soon had Wexford in front again before her side collapsed.

DOUBLES DELIGHT: Two pairings brought Leinster handball doubles titles home, with Myles Connors and Felix Doran beating David Clifford and John Morrissey of Kilkenny (21-10, 21-17) in Junior ‘B’, while Pat Cleary and Benny Doyle saw off Carlow’s Martin Clancy and Michael Doyle in the Silver Masters ‘A’ decider (21-18, 21-12).

ROSS LADS RULE: Substitute Shane Roche and outstanding play-maker Seán Purcell were the Geraldine O’Hanrahans heroes in Wexford Park when the Rossonians displayed great heart to shake off a battling Craanford outfit and clinch the delayed Under-21 football Roinn 1 championship crown for 2004.

The game went to extra-time, with the Barrowsiders victorious by 2-15 to 1-14.

They were captained by Jimmy Smith, with both goals coming from Roche, who had played with the county Minors 24 hours earlier against Carlow.

Patrick Murray top-scored for Craanford with 1-4 from play.
