Illegal dumping becoming ‘a big problem’ across the town and district

‘AS SOON AS ONE LOAD IS CLEARED, MORE APPEARS’

- By BRENDAN KEANE

THE District Manager in Enniscorthy, Ger Mackey, has said that incidents of illegal dumping are on the increase in the town and district.

‘It’s a big problem and it seems as if every time we clean up one [load], another one appears,’ said Mr Mackey.

However, he highlighted that while currently there are restrictions in terms of movement the local authority is still monitoring such incidents and will use whatever means necessary to catch those responsible.

Unfortunately, it seems no place is safe from those who are engaged in such activities with places like Monart, Scarawalsh and Ballycarney all being targeted.

Residents have also expressed their concern about the matter, with one man highlighting increased incidents of illegal dumping between Ballycarney to Scarawalsh.

‘Over the years, there has been numerous dumpings, from arm chairs to house-hold rubbish,’ said the man, who wished to remain anonymous. ‘The latest is a box and bag of really good condition books dumped in the last few days.

‘There are also bags of rubbish along the ditches too and it seems that somebody is dumping their household scraps on the road also as I was passing this evening on my walk I found a large rat eating from it,’ he added.

The resident also pointed out that in addition to the illegal dumping blighting the countryside, some of the items discarded could have been given away.

‘It is such a pity as charity shops could have taken the books and a lot of the rubbish dumped could be disposed of in the Kilcannon recycling centre,’ he said.

However, he said the issue of illegal dumping has been ongoing for some time.

‘I feel the council should have taken action years ago with signs informing people of fines, which have been put up on other roads, or even hidden cameras to catch these people and fine them,’ said the man.

Meanwhile, Mr Mackey said the local authority takes illegal dumping very seriously and every effort will be made to find out who is responsible.
