LOCAL CLUBS

Last week we commented on the great service provided by our local business in these unprecedented times. This week we think of the sports clubs and other amenities such as those provided by St Mary’s Community Hall.

We often think that there is not much going on the village but the unfortunate closure of St Mary’s Hall means that the is no weekly bingo, no Country Market on Saturday not to mention the many plays and other activities that take place in the hall.

While the GAA adult season would only be kicking off about now the underage age sections for both boys and girls would be well under way providing many hours of physical activity for the young players and entertainment for their parents and supporters.

Spare a thought also for the Fethard Rangers men’s team who were on the brink of winning the league and gaining promotion, this is now put on hold for another few weeks. When the present restrictions are lifted these clubs and other activities will need your support even more than before.

DR COX’S SURGERY

Dr Cox’s Surgery in Fethard is now closed to appointments. We will only see urgent cases. Please do not call to the surgery, phone if you need advice. Our phone lines have been inundated with phone calls so please be patient. We are doing prescriptions as normal and will send them to our local chemists. Your patience is appreciated at this difficult time.

HOOK TOURISM

Hook Tourism have closed both the Fethard and Duncannon offices till further notice due to COVID19. If anyone needs anything printed urgently then email info@hooktourism.com and we will endeavour to help.

FETHARD ST MOGUE’S GAA 2010.

Another blast from the past this week. This time it is the first ever success of the Féile Football team in 2010. They defeated Starlights in the Premier Final to qualify for the national finals in Derry.

Fethard played with the advantage of a strong breeze in the first half. A sweeping movement involving Bryan Power and Mikie Dwyer saw Adam Swan finish to the net after two minutes. Joe Sutton had his shot saved just minutes later. Mikie Dwyer, who terrorized their defence all day kicked a point after eight minutes.

Fethard took control moments later when impressive midfielder Evan Rowe burst through to finish an unstoppable shot to the net. Joe Sutton was denied again minutes later when his shot came back of the crossbar. Adam Swan, Mikie Dwyer and Bryan Power added points before the break to leave the half time score 2-4 to 0-0.

The Fethard defence had coped well with everything Starlights tried in the first half and they continued this in the second period as full back and captain Seán Sutton led by example with good assistance from his other defenders, in particular Paddy Trainor. Fethard got the first score of the half from an Adam Swan free after nine minutes.

Starlights then enjoyed their best period kicking three unanswered points but the goal they needed never came as the Fethard defence stood strong with goalkeeper Niall Roche dealing capably with all that came his way.

Clever interplay in the dying minutes between midfielders Evan Rowe and Bryan Power ended with Adam Swan shooting to the net to bring his tally for the day to 2-2 in a Peter Canavan like performance. The game ended on a 3-5 to 0-3 scoreline as a very proud captain Seán Sutton received the cup from county footballer David Murphy.

This was one of the best performances ever by a Fethard team as they played fast attractive football while their defence conceded only eight points over five games in the competition which has to be a record.

The team was coached Jim Byrne and Aidan Barry. The defence of goalkeeper Niall Roche and backs Ricky Rowe, Seán Sutton, Martin Doyle, Patrick Trainor, Daire Barden and Seán Donohue were massive throughout. Midfielders Bryan Power and Evan Rowe dominated this area. The forwards Daniel Johnson, Mikie Dwyer Joe Sutton, Jean Luc Tubritt, Adam Swan and Christopher Molloy showed great skill and movement. The subs Richard Waters, who was injured, Stephen Morrissey, James Dillon, Dubhan Tubritt, Jack Costello, Jimmy Sutton, Peter Waters and Mikie Barden played throughout the earlier games to get them to the final.
