Wellness programme begins

Series of events lined up by G.A.A. for rest of month

- BY ALAN AHERNE

THE PLAYING fields are likely to remain silent for a considerable time yet, but that hasn’t stopped Wexford G.A.A. from organising a vibrant wellness programme which is being rolled out until the last day of the month.

The activities started yesterday (Monday), and they will continue until Saturday, May 31, with all those yearning for a return of our national games actively encouraged to take part.

McCauley Health and Beauty Pharmacy are sponsors of the online, interactive programme once again, and the impressive line-up really does contain something for everyone.

The aim is to promote mental health and personal wellbeing during this difficult time, and there will be skills challenges, educational webinars, and a range of activities suitable for all age groups.

It hasn’t been easy for those in the over-70 category, so the fact that Wexford inter-county players past and present have volunteered to call cocooning members of the community deserves the highest commendation. A few minutes’ chat with a prominent hurler or footballer could very well make somebody’s day in these times.

Three live online Reeling in the Years panel discussions should prove a big attraction, with programmes planned with the All-Ireland hurling winners of 1996, the All-Ireland football semi-finalists of 2008, and the three-in-a-row All-Ireland camogie champions of 2010 to 2012.

Davy Fitzgerald and Lee Chin will set skills challenges for the younger generation, while the packed programme also includes a weekly online family table quiz, club activity challenges, coaching webinars, and various items geared towards primary school children.

On the final day of the programme (Sunday, May 31), Wexford supporters worldwide are encouraged to don their county colours while walking in their local area with members of their household to promote health and wellbeing in their local communities.

Further information on the wellness programme is available from the Co. Secretary, Gearóid Devitt (secretary.wexford@gaa.ie or 0871218365), while more details and links to the various events are available on the County Board website (www.wexfordgaa.ie), or by following @OfficialWexGAA on Twitter.
