Accurate Lillis earns point for Blackwater
THE ENTERTAINMENT was plentiful in Wexford Park on May 15, 2010, when Blackwater and Rathgarogue-Cushinstown shared the spoils in their opening encounter in Group C of the Pettitt’s Senior hurling championship.
A late free from the deadly-accurate Michael Lillis ensured parity for the Wexford District side on a 3-10 each scoreline, although they seemed to have been hard done by earlier when a shot by Niall McLoughlin into the town end after 18 minutes was waved wide when it looked like a cast-iron point.
In the same group, Ferns St. Aidan’s were in flying form when they flattened Buffers Alley by 2-20 to 1-8 in Wexford Park, with the goals coming from Christopher ‘Bitsy’ O’Connor and Patrick Farrell.
The fare was poor in Taghmon, with Oylegate-Glenbrien earning a 1-9 apiece draw with Faythe
Harriers when Jamie Reck split the posts from a line ball with just over 30 seconds of normal time left.
Rapparees outpointed neighbours Marshalstown-Castledockrell in Group B in Wexford Park (16-12), with Tomás Mahon (six, four frees), Eamonn Furlong (three), James Peare (two), Cathal Murphy (two), Tommy Foley, Eoin Quigley and Barry Nolan all featuring on the scoresheet.
Turning to the Intermediate hurling action, Fethard were subjected to a cruel defeat in Wexford Park when Naomh Eanna’s Barry Fitzgerald goaled with the second-last puck of the game to seal a 3-14 to 3-13 success.
Rathnure’s second string had to work very hard to edge past Clongeen by 4-12 to 0-22 in New Ross, while Niall O’Loughlin and John Breen goaled as Monageer-Boolavogue beat St. Mary’s (Rosslare) by 2-10 to 0-12.
