Darts wins on double
Success in London
THE SPORTING links between Wexford and London have always been very strong, even though movement between the two places is next to impossible at the moment.
Nonetheless, there are fond memories of several trips taken to the English capital prior to the arrival of Covid-19, and one of the most recent was for an annual darts challenge.
Two teams, male and female, travelled over to represent the county against their London counterparts, all of whom were proud of their close family connections to Wexford.
The games were played at the Done Our Bit club in Kilburn, and the 16 members comprising the purple and gold teams returned home in triumph after recording a brace of victories.
Both trophies are safely back in Wexford at the moment, and the London crew will have to wait until the coronavirus restrictions are lifted before they can get another crack at winning them back.
Lucia Butler from Clongeen, Chairperson of the London Wexford Association, greeted everyone beforehand with a warm welcome in her speech, while
Emily Cronin provided some wonderful scrumptious food for everyone to enjoy.
All participants on both the Wexford and London sides received a beautiful medal, kindly sponsored by Billy O’Brien, that darts legend from Ballycogley who also had the distinction of captaining the victorious men’s team.
Mary Codd led the women’s side to success, and the other participants included Mena Bright, Kathleen Costigan, Mary Doyle, Mary Cooksley, Noreen Roche, Suzanne Roche, Emily Cronin, Liz Scott, Helen Cunningham, Teresa Ward, Martine Howe, Alice Mackenzie and Kayleen Oliver.
O’Brien was joined in the men’s encounter by Ger Foxe, Damien Donovan, John Murphy, John Sweeney, Jim Roche, Jeff Nolan, Mick Clampett, Darren Cronin, Gary Cooke, George Morris, Liam Duncan, Steven Morris, John Lacey, Nick Duncan, Rob McDonnell and Mick McAuliffe.
The annual darts game coincided with the London Wexford Association’s annual reunion buffet dance at the Mazenod Social Club in Kilburn, and a great night was had by all in attendance.
