Leinster Under-14 joy

-

THE WEXFORD Under-14 ladies’ football team travelled to McCann Park in Portarlington to play Longford in the Leinster ‘B’ championship final and returned home as convincing winners on a 5-11 to 0-7 scoreline.

A goal from Ciara Rossiter in the early stages put them firmly on the road to glory, with Ellen O’Brien, Chloe Foxe and Aoife Ryan adding points over the ten minutes that followed.

Rebecca Foley then goaled from a tight angle to leave Wexford in the driving seat, although Longford did threaten and it took some good saves by Katie Lawlor plus the timely intervention of full-back Kacey Maher to keep them at bay.

Another Foley goal, after fine work by midfielder Aodhnait Kehoe, meant that the Slaneyside girls led by 3-7 to 0-1 at half-time, and they were in no mood to surrender that strong advantage even though their midland rivals scored the first three points on the re-start.

Ciara Rossiter’s second goal settled her colleagues, and she made sure of the player of the match accolade by completing her hat-trick with an unstoppable shot high into the net.
