Easing of restrictions has led to a miraculous tennis match pairing
ANOTHER week, another dispatch although truth be told I don’t have much to impart.
Funnily enough the easing of restrictions has made me feel worse. It was all a bit anti-climatic to be honest and I was left wondering if we will ever see normality again.
When the tennis clubs reopened, I played a game of tennis with Himself which is a miracle in itself really. It took a global pandemic for him to agree to play with me. He may have notions of following in Federer’s footsteps but I ain’t no Serena Williams.
We got through it without killing each other...just, but afterwards standing around talking to people, 2 metres apart just felt ridiculous. We were all shouting at each other to be heard and pretending to be delighted that we could socialise again. But it felt awkward and contrived and not very normal at all.
Meanwhile my First Born is 18 next week and all plans for birthday celebrations have obviously gone out the window.
He has taken it on the chin – his cancelled Longitude weekend, a holiday to Spain, nights out with his friends, he hasn’t complained once.
He has just gotten on with it and dealt with it much better than I, or many of my contemporaries have.
Last week was the first time he’d seen his friends in ages. He invited two of the lads over to the garden for a coffee. When I checked to see if they were social distancing, there they were, sitting two metres apart drinking a bottle of beer each to mark the occasion and laughing their heads off. I was so proud of them.
Now that I’ve publicly lauded him and said how proud I am, he’ll probably start snorting cocaine or whatever is the drug de jour, rob a car and fail his Leaving Cert but you know, you have to take the wins when you can! And all joking aside I do think our young people deserve an honourable mention for by and large, abiding by the rules. We all know how important their friends are at that age and to have that taken from them so suddenly is nothing short of traumatic. They have shown great resilience and integrity in difficult times.
For now I’m just trying to be grateful for the small things – school is over which means no more home schooling – Thank The Lord, I can meet up with a couple of my friends for a chat now, the weather has been unseasonably good and my favourite Rose wine is on special offer in Aldi!
