YOUTHS CRASH OUT: The step up in class proved too much in Tallaght Stadium on June 4, 2010, when Wexford Youths crashed out of the FAI Ford Cup at the third round stage to Shamrock Rovers on a 5-1 scoreline.

Dessie Baker ensured it would be a trying night for the visitors when he netted after a mere three minutes, although Gary Sheahan did give them hope before the first quarter was over when he equalised after getting on the end of a long ball from Dean Broaders and looping it over netminder Alan Mannus.

However, that was as good as it got for the underdogs, with Gary Twigg restoring the lead for the hoops on the half-hour mark before James Chambers (two) and substitute Chris Turner made the game safe in the second period.

STAFFORD DOUBLE: Antoinette Stafford of D.M.P. had a very successful weekend at the Leinster Senior and Masters track and field championships in Tullamore when she won gold in both the 200m and the long jump, posting a mark of 5.76 metres for the latter event.

Meanwhile, Tony Stafford of Menapians jumped just short of his best with 6.29 to secure bronze in the All-Ireland schools competition.

HORESWOOD CELEBRATE: The official opening of the new indoor facilities in Horeswood G.A.A. club was performed by the national President, Christy Cooney, as part of a bumper weekend of celebrations.

A seven-a-side football tournament was also organised, with the Paul Bealin-managed Graiguecullen beating fellow Laois side, Arles-Kilcruise, in a penalty shoot-out in the final after the sides finished level (2-6 each).

The handball gallery was packed for an exhibition game of the highest quality, with world number one Paul Brady from Cavan defeating Wicklow’s Michael Gregan in two straight sets.

And a Senior hurling challenge saw Wexford go down to Limerick on a 3-22 to 0-21 scoreline.

FLOGAS FINALS: Wexford Park played host to the Flogas Under-14 hurling finals, with the titles won by St. Peter’s and Wexford C.B.S. respectively.

The Summerhill side saw off their keenest rivals, Good Counsel (New Ross), by 2-13 to 0-7 in the Division 1 decider, with Bill Eviston captaining the side, and the goals coming from Jake Firman and Naomhan Rossiter.

COOLGREANY CROWNED: Coolgreany added another Leinster handball title to the club’s impressive list of honours when they beat Kells in the Junior team of four final.

RACKARD WINNERS: The Nancy Quigley-captained Rathnure defeated Piercestown in the Rackard League Roinn ‘A’ camogie final in Wexford Park by 6-4 to 3-4.
