MINI MARVELS: Old rivals Wexford Albion and Wexford Celtic met in a high-class Jack’s Mini World Cup final in Whitemill on June 7, 2015, and the home side claimed the trophy for the sixth time in the competition’s 44-year history thanks to goals from Alex Currid and People Newspapers player of the match Luke Murphy.

Wexford Albion: Max Stone, Alex Kirby (capt.), Ben English, Kalem O’Connor, Luke Murphy, Jessie Dempsey, Alex Currid, Reece Leonard, Ryan Curran, Mark Tormey.

Wexford Celtic: Killian Whelan, Darby Purcell (capt.), Darragh Houghton, Oisín Kavanagh, Eoghan O Lionáin, Jake Gilshinan, Alexis Ashgharian, Cuan Gallagher, David Osasare.

Referee: Jimmy O’Neill. HANDBALL HAPPENINGS: David Kenny and Mylie Connors both secured semi-final berths in the 60 x 30 Junior singles handball county championship after winning competitive encounters.

Connors, from New Ross, was brilliant in his defeat of Jason Murphy (Castlebridge) on a 21-7, 2114 scoreline, but Kenny grabbed revenge for his club in the second part of the double-header as he got the better of Michael Goggins by default.

Kenny took the opening set 21-19, before losing the second 21-15, and he was awarded the game while leading the third 10-9 when his opponent cried off with an injured ankle.

CODD SECOND: The amazing Derek O’Connor took his title back from Wexford’s Jamie Codd when he was crowned the leading jockey on the national point-to-point scene for the eleventh time thanks to 90 winners.

Codd, the Mayglass man now living in Monasterevin, Co. Kildare, still had a season to remember.

It was decorated with doubles at the Cheltenham (Cause of Causes and The Package) and Punchestown (Champers on Ice and Petit Mouchoir) Festivals, along with 69 point wins.

However, those Festival victories came at a cost, as he was hit with twelve days in riding bans, and all those lost meetings scuttled his championship chances.

POLOCROSSE WEEKEND: Teams from all over the country travelled to compete in the annual Horetown polocrosse tournament.

The hosts finished second in the ‘A’ grade, sandwiched between the World Cup men’s and women’s teams, and one of their key figures - Emily McDonagh - was a deserving winner of the best individual player accolade.

JOSH ON FORM: Josh Murphy, the rugby player with strong links to Enniscorthy, made his mark with the Ireland Under-20 team in the World Cup, as they disposed of Argentina (18-16) and Scotland (24-20).

DOBBS DELIVERS: It was a great day out at Epsom on June 6, 2015, for one Enniscorthy family as jockey Pat Dobbs landed the Coronation Cup in style.

The Richard Hannon-trained Pether’s Moon created a shock when winning the four-runner race at 11/1, and becoming a first Group One winner for the talented pilot, Dobbs.

The 37-year-old, a freelance rider, had long been associated with the yard run by Hannon Senior and Junior in Wiltshire.

‘He was very good there - he has loads of speed,’ he said.
