Teenager causes €1,000 in damage during rampage in Enniscorthy

-

A TEENAGER who caused €1,000 worth of damage to Enniscorthy shop windows and repeatedly damaged family property is now back living with his parents, the District Court was told.

The address of 18-year-old Dimitri Nacu was given in court paperwork as 5 Westbury Woods, Enniscorthy but he told the judge that he was now resident in Fearach Cnoc.

He admitted damaging the windows at Bart’s charity shop, Orchard fruit and vegetable shop, Bruce Betting and the Presentation Centre in December of 2017.

He also admitted damaging a garden bench and an office chair at the address in Westbury Woods, the property of his mother Zanna Mokra on dates in 2018.

It was accepted that on one occasion he took Ms Mokra’s car without her permission in December of 2017 and he was later intercepted by gardaí at the wheel of the vehicle.

In May of the following year he threatened to burn down the house and smash up the car.

Defending solicitor Ed King acknowledged that his young client, who was a juvenile at the time of all the offences, had been abusing many substances at the time.

Mr King recalled that he had attempted to arrange a psychiatric report on Nacu but he wrote to six psychiatrists without success.

The finalisation of the case was also delayed by the fact that the accused repeatedly failed to appear in court, with five warrants issued for his arrest.

Some of the time he was in Lithuania, the solicitor confirmed.

Mr King reckoned that Nacu had now turned a corner and achieved a greater level of maturity.

Judge Brian O’Shea was not impressed by what he termed a campaign of destruction and by the failure to produce any compensation.

The court could not ignore the number of offences committed, with a three month prison sentence imposed for the attack on Bruce Betting.

This term was suspended for 12 months, with all other matters marked ‘taken into consideration’.
