Women’s soccer re-start last weekend in August

-

THE WEEKEND of August 29-30 has been earmarked for the re-start of games in the 2019-’20 Wexford and District Women’s and Schoolgirls’ League season.

A document seen by this newspaper has indicated that 95% of the adult clubs were happy to complete their games programme once HSE guidelines deemed it safe to do so.

And while some of the clubs at under-age level voiced minor queries and concerns, the general trend favoured a return also.

The consultation process began in April when the league Secretary contacted the clubs, and at early stage in the rapidly-developing crisis, the response with regard to completing the season was described as ‘wary’.

However, as the situation improved regarding Covid-19, some clubs contacted the league to confirm they would be interested in returning to play once guidelines facilitated that possibility.

It was after a further approach was made the league administrator earlier this month that the 95% figure in favour of resuming activity emerged.

Referees officiating in the league are a mix of ISRS members and FAI registered, and all are agreeable to return to taking charge of matches once it is deemed safe to do so.

In a further boost, all pitches within the league are privately-owned and available for games to be played.
