People living in Kiltealy and Ballindaggin at the foot of Blackstairs Mountains were among the worst hit by the recent blizzard with all minor roads in the area impassable but especially remote mountain lanes which were inaccessible with huge drifts. Farmers in the area were especially hard hit by the storm as they tended to livestock, even tractors were having difficulty moving. Frozen water pipes caused much hardship for many. Unlike 1982 everyone was warned well in advance so all households were well prepared with freezers stocked to capacity and Wexford County Council were also ready for the blizzard with large stocks of salt and machinery to clear roads.

Work is almost completed on the notorious Doran’s Bridge outside Kiltealy village. Wexford County Council began work in early June resurfacing the road, raising it and re-aligned the signage, new road markings have also been completed. The cutting back of ditch and trees on the Bunclody side made a big impact on visibility and some local volunteers have re-seeded the margin. Solar powered flashing lights will be erected in the coming weeks. The junction will be further monitored over the coming months but it is hoped that the changes will have a positive effect on safety at the crossing.
