Templeshannon to be included in pedestrianisation plan
THE Templeshannon area of Enniscorthy is to be included in pedestrianisation plans aimed at helping local businesses recover from the adverse effects of the lockdown.
At this month’s statutory meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council the members were presented with an outline of the pedestrianisation plan which was agreed following consultation with the Enniscorthy & District Chamber and a steering committee that was set up and composed of business representatives.
In his report to the members District Manager, Ger Mackey, recommended that pedestrianisation of Market Square and adjoining streets should take place between 7 p.m. and 11.30 p.m., from Friday to Sunday.
Mr Mackey also suggested that pedestrianisation might also be possible ‘one other day’.
‘ This was the preferred option as it does not hamper the day retail trade and will give a huge advantage to the hospitality sector during this challenging period,’ he said.
Mr Mackey said a risk assessment is being carried out at present to ensure that public safety is a priority.
‘We are also looking at Templeshannon,’ said Mr Mackey, before adding that a number of premises would find it difficult.
The areas that will be earmarked for the pedestrianisation plan include Rafter Street, Weafer Street, Slaney Street and in Templeshannon from the bridge to the junction where traffic goes left towards the swimming pool.
Mr Mackey said: ‘We are going to create a family-friendly offering around food and hospitality.’
‘It [the plan] doesn’t affect the day trade at all,’ said Mr Mackey.
Cllr Jackser Owens gave his full support to the plan and proposed it be adopted.
He also suggested that street entertainment should also be considered and said: ‘I think it would be good to have a few bands going on as well.’
Cllr John O’Rourke asked if consultation had taken place with local taxi operators as such pedestrianisation measures could impact their businesses.
In response Mr Mackey said there will be set down areas included for them.
Cllr Aidan Browne asked if the Duffry Gate area could also be looked at.
‘I am conscious we are leaving out the Duffry Gate area,’ he said.
‘We will look at it,’ replied Mr Mackey.
