Weak Dubs destroyed

Easy for Wexford in camogie championship

- BY ALAN AHERNE

THE FIRST step in what developed into a memorable three-in-a-row of All-Ireland titles was undertaken with some ease by the Wexford Senior camogie team in Wexford Park on June 19, 2010.

Four weeks after a 22-point drubbing of Dublin in the Leinster championship, the outcome was even more emphatic on this occasion as the rampant home team crushed their weak rivals by 7-25 to 0-3.

The scoring stakes were led by the prolific Una Leacy, who finished with 3-6 to her credit from play even though she went into battle with a heavily-strapped left knee.

And that personal haul could have been even higher, because she chose to take safe points over probable goals in the second-half when Dublin were wishing for the game to conclude.

With five more group games to follow over successive weeks, nobody was getting carried away with the straightforward nature of a victory that would have been foreseen against struggling opponents.

‘Today we expected to win but we wanted the attitude and the application to be right and we got that,’ said manager J.J. Doyle.

In the early stages it looked like Dublin might have something to offer as they took a 0-3 to 0-2 lead after ten minutes, thanks to free-taker Louise O’Hara.

It was a false dawn all the same, because they didn’t register again for the remainder of the game and rarely managed even a decent attacking move.

The opening Wexford goal arrived when an exquisite Ursula Jacob pass over the defence created space for speedy corner-forward Lenny Holohan to rattle the net.

And after adding three points herself, Jacob provided another assist for Una Leacy who eased past her marker before handpassing the ball beyond Dublin netminder Stephanie Carthy.

Leacy returned the compliment when Jacob struck number three, and it was 4-10 to 0-3 by the interval after the former doubled her personal haul of goals.

An excellent Katrina Parrock pass produced the goal of the game for Fiona Kavanagh – a bullet effort into the top left corner as the gap was widened to 27 points.

Less than 60 seconds later, Parrock netted the sixth herself, and there was still ample time for Leacy to strike for number seven in this complete mis-match.
