ROSSLARE
As we prepare to enter phase three at Rosslare golf links, we look forward to welcoming back our members from outside the county to their beautiful course. Our catering and bar facilities will open again on June 29 under the new guidelines.
The news you have all been waiting for is that our Burrow course re-opened yesterday (Monday) for members and guests under strict conditions.
All bookings must be made online or via the Pro Shop, and everyone must sign in at the Pro Shop at the main course before play.
Our club and open competitions will be back in full swing in this phase. Well done to Denis Noonan who won the competitions purse draw.
There will be another draw at the end of the month for those who open their purse between June 6-28. Don’t forget to open your purse, so you can enter all our upcoming competitions.
We are also getting back to our Junior golf programme for July, August and September. Every Monday evening, starting July 6, on the Burrow course at 6.30 p.m. there will be a warm-up, fun games, putting, pitching, and every Wednesday from July 8 at 7 p.m. it will be ‘Golf with George’.
Our social distancing policy and safety guidelines are in place. Please text Joan on 087-9283090 for information and booking.
We are looking forward to seeing all our members and visitors on our course during the next few months.
Our ladies’ open week will commence on July 27, with the men’s starting on Saturday, August 2.
DONOHOE’SSOCIETY
Donohoe’s Golf Society played Blackwater on Sunday morning, with only 15 players allowed out to play on Father’s Day!
First was ‘Prof’ Nolan with 37 points and, following his win last week was Andrew Holden in second place on 34 points.
Beaten on a countback in third place was Cha O’Brien, also with 34 points. T.J. Cahill won the birdie money with a birdie on the index five hole.
Next Sunday we play Quinnagh House. As usual please bring the correct money and be there by 8.45 a.m.
WEXFORD
Another milestone on our road back to normality has been reached, as golf competitions are re-starting as and from Monday, June 29.
This announcement will be eagerly welcomed by all golfers, and particularly by their golf clubs who have gone without any competition entry fees or green fees since March.
In the meantime, these golf clubs faced considerable costs in keeping their courses maintained and ready for play once the recommencement of activity was announced.
The first competition will be a ladies’ and gents’ 18-hole members-only singles competition played over two days, Monday and Tuesday, June 29 and 30. A player can only play once over these two days.
On Wednesday, July 1, there will be an open 14hole ladies’ and gents’ fourball. On Friday, July 3, we will have an open three-person team event over 14 holes, and on Saturday, July 4, and Sunday, July 5, we will have our annual Seamus Quaid Memorial competition.
Detective Garda Seamus Quaid was murdered while on duty in October, 1980. Seamus was a long-standing, highly respected member of Wexford Golf Club, and our thanks go to the Gardaí at Wexford barracks who sponsor this competition each year in his memory.
The Howlin Cup entry sheet, which is in the gents’ locker room, will close next Saturday.
The competition committee will soon be issuing a revised schedule of competitions for July, August and September.
Details of our open week will be published as soon as possible. It will probably be held at the end of July and running into the first few days of August.
The latest daily raffle winners of a voucher in our Pro Shop were Brian McKenna, Louis Flanagan, Theresa Kehoe and Aislinn O’Leary. A donation from the proceeds from this draw will be made to the Hope Centre in Enniscorthy.
Members, please note that all future club competition entry fees must be paid through the competition purse system. If you have not yet set this system up for yourself, please ensure that you do so to avoid problems of entering any future competitions.
Please also note that all gents playing should use either the blue tees or the green tees (your choice) during this week as our course staff will be working on all of the white tees during this week.
On a final note for this week, many golfers have passed very positive comments on the 14 minutes tee-times being used at present as recommended by the authorities to ensure social distancing.
Eighteen-hole rounds of three and a quarter and three and a half hours are commonly being reported as there are no hold-ups.
Realising the limitations on the number of those wanting to play each day, perhaps consideration would be given on ten-minute intervals when we all get back to normal, whenever or whatever normal golf is or will be then.
