ALMOST 900 COVID TESTS IN JUST FIVE DAYS

BUSY FIRST WEEK FOR POP-UP TEST CENTRE AT FERNS GAA CLUB

- By BRENDAN KEANE

ALMOST 900 tests for suspected Covid-19 cases were carried out at the Ferns test centre between when the facility opened on Monday afternoon, October 12, and last Friday.

A spokesperson for the HSE told this newspaper that 892 tests were carried out throughout the week after the centre was opened in response to concerns at the recent spike in confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the north of the county.

The spokesperson also informed this newspaper that a further 1,563 tests were carried out during the week at the Community Testing Centre in Whitemill, in Wexford town, up until Sunday night, meaning 2,455 people were tested for Covid-19 in the county last week.

The Ferns centre is located at St Aidan’s GAA club and it differs from the Wexford facility in that those being tested enter the clubhouse for the test – entering through the front door and exiting at the rear to avoid any overlap.

There has been an alarming spike in the number of confirmed cases in County Wexford within the last couple of weeks and it was in direct response to that the HSE set up the additional test facility in Ferns.

The HSE spokesperson is again advising anyone in Wexford who has Covid-19 symptoms to self-isolate and contact their GP.

‘Likewise, anyone who knows they are a close contact of a case needs to stay at home for 14 days pending testing,’ said the spokesperson.

‘ Those who receive a positive test result will also need to self-isolate for 10 days,’ he added.

Tests are by referral only and are free-ofcharge.

If you don’t have a GP, any GP or the Caredoc out of hours GP service, will arrange for a test to be carried out.

As this newspaper went to press there were 793 confirmed Covid-19 cases in County Wexford.
