Bree school to get a pedestrian crossing

- By BRENDAN KEANE

FUNDING has been secured by Wexford County Council for a pedestrian crossing to be installed at Bree National School.

Principal Mark Kelly welcomed the development, which will enhance the safety of children attending the school as well as other pedestrians crossing the road in the village.

Cllr Cathal Byrne also welcomed the news and expressed delight that the work is going to be done.

‘I welcome the recent announcement that Wexford County Council has secured funding for a pedestrian crossing at Bree National School under the Government’s Active Travel Measures Scheme,’ he said. ‘In a time of great uncertainty, this is a good news story.’

Cllr Byrne said that over the last 12 months he was contacted by parents and members of the Board of Management at the school about the issue of road safety and the need for such a crossing specifically for the school.

‘I am glad that this funding will help make that vision a reality,’ he said.

Cllr Byrne acknowledged the support he and the school received from District Engineer, Neil Dempsey, who met with him and Mr Kelly on-site and who helped with the funding application.

‘I also want to pay tribute to Gary Byrne, of Byrne’s of Bree for his support with the application for funding,’ said Cllr Byrne. The crossing will run from the school to near Byrne’s Eurospar store.

‘It would be my hope that additional funding can be sought in the future to light up the crossing,’ said Cllr Byrne.

The Active Travel Measures Scheme was introduced under the Government’s Jobs Stimulus Plan in July.

‘A key focus of the scheme is to enable school children to walk to school and this funding will make that a safer experience for school children attending Bree National School,’ said Cllr Byrne. ‘ This is a project that was raised with me during the local election campaign and I’m glad to have been able to assist with securing the funding.’
