Joey is dreaming big after win

- By DAVID LOOBY

WHAT a great start to the motorcycle racing season for New Ross youth Joey Hennessy (16).

Following on from the success of last year’s season, Joey has made an excellent start by already winning one of his first Moto One races on his Kawasaki Ninja 300cc race bike. Last year, Joey came third overall in the Irish Minibike Championship which led to him really making a name for himself in the sport. A recent weekend of racing in Northern Ireland saw Joey take third place in Bishopscourt Racing Circuit, followed by a win in torrential rain in Kirkistown Racing Circuit.

Joey will take part in racing events all over Ireland, including the Mondello Masters and the USBK (Ulster Superbike Championship). A trip to England for the British Superbikes (BSB) might also be on the cards, depending on sponsorship!

His father, Martin, a passionate motorcycle racing fan, has spent the last 13 years coaching and encouraging Joey, and is immensely proud of how his teenage son has progressed in the sport since he officially began racing four years ago. Martin continues to work hard to fully support Joey’s dream of becoming a motorcycle racing champion.

It is an expensive pursuit and Martin would like to sincerely thank all the people who have sponsored and supported Joey to date.

“Without the generosity of Joey’s sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to fully commit to the sport and Joey would not have gotten this far, so we are extremely grateful to every single person who has helped us along the way. To give a teenager an opportunity like this is priceless and we genuinely appreciate the kindness of everyone who has helped us to date. We are thoroughly enjoying the racing season and are delighted with his success so far.”

Joey himself is taking it all in his stride, but would also like to thank all the people who are helping to make his dream become a reality.

“I just love motorcycle racing. It’s what I’ve wanted to do since as far back as I can remember. My Dad is brilliant for making sure I get the chance to follow my dream. I think he’s my biggest fan! Thanks for all the encouragement and support, Dad.”
