Mary’s claim crucial points

Kilmore pipped by minimum

- DEAN GOODISON in Innovate Wexford Park

ST MARY’S (M’TOWN) 1-13 KILMORE 2-9 WHILE NOT mathematically certain, St. Mary’s (Maudlintown) have, barring a crazy chain of results, achieved their first objective of remaining in the Ashdown Park/ Amber Springs Hotels Intermediate football championship after this merited Group B victory over Kilmore in Innovate Wexford Park on Sunday.

However, the quarter-finals are within touching distance and there’s no reason why the boys from The Rocks can’t push on and make the knockout stages.

They were the more disciplined side in this game, kicked some superb scores and fully deserved their narrow victory in an entertaining contest.

Kilmore are staring down the barrel of a relegation battle after three consecutive losses and they have only themselves to blame. With the full complement of players they might well have won this game, but when Noel Casey was red-carded in the first-half, he left his side with a lot to do short-handed on a warm afternoon.

With barely a minute gone, Kilmore had points from Paddy Byrne and Aaron Goff on the scoreboard.

St. Mary’s replied with the opening goal after good work by Gavin Cullen and Dermot Flood allowed Jason Swords to fire home off the post.

A rocket in off the underside of the crossbar by David Murphy in the ninth minute helped the seasiders into a 1-4 to 1-0 lead after the opening quarter.

That advantage was down to two when Casey was sent-off for striking Ross Lynch in the 24th minute.

Still, Kilmore, with Tom Byrne on form, went in at the break leading by 1-6 to 1-4.

Yet, Martin O’Connor and Ross Lynch took just five second-half minutes to drag St. Mary’s level.

The tie was still deadlocked in the 41st minute when Shane Goff split the Maudlintown defence with a sensational pass to Conor Moore and the substitute applied the perfect finish past William Lambert (2-7 to 1-7).

St. Mary’s didn’t panic and got their just rewards in the final quarter.

They pulled level when Donal O’Leary pointed ten minutes from time, and further scores from Ross Lynch, Dermot Flood and Swords were just enough to give them victory.
